Connections
The 9001 is connected to the audio interview recorder by the 9 pin serial interface. A network connection will be required in the interview room and this is connected to the network port on the 9001. A connection port is also provided for the optional metadata input device (e.g. touch screen). A mains power outlet is required. For security reasons all other connections are disabled.
Recording Format and Onboard Storage
The 9001 records in standard audio files two channels comprising the audio interview and the time announcements. During the interview the audio is recorded onto the 9001 in addition to the interview cassette recorder. Recording is made at 22050 samples per second, which produces a recording that is of significantly higher quality than tape. The 9001 features a security hardened
operating system and an internal hard disk drive. At the end of the interview (when the cassettes are removed) the 9001 transfers the audio file from the internal hard disk onto a network server. The audio file is checked on arrival at the server, using checksum technology, to ensure it has arrived intact and cannot have been tampered with before the recorder deletes its copy from the hard disk. The internal hard disk drive allows interviews to continue in the event of a failure in the network failure of any kind between the interview room and the transcription server. More than two weeks of interviews can be stored by the 9001 in the event of a network problem.
Metadata
In addition to the audio interview and time announcements metadata can be added to the audio file prior to be being transferred onto the network. As a minimum this comprises when the interview was conducted and the recorder (location) on which the interview was conducted. To speed the transcription and management process, additional metadata can also be attached to the recording. This can be
performed by the use of the optional touch screen (see below).
Enhanced Metadata System (optional)
When there is no physical recording media to pass around the organisation, it is easy to imagine a large jumble of computer files containing recordings accumulating. Each file might be identified only by a date, time and recording machine serial number, providing limited criteria to find the required recording. The NEAL 9001enables the information about the recording, known as metadata to be extended, enabling interviews stored on the network to be better identified, better organised and more speedily retrieved. Data captured at the time of the interview is also likely to be accurate and can be automatically imported when creating a new transcription document (e.g. MG15). A touch screen is typically used to provide a capability for a wide range of metadata to be captured, typically including officers’ collar numbers, suspect name and date of birth along with a unique reference such as a custody reference number. NEAL are also happy to discuss other ways to input metadata such as integration with existing IT systems. |
